Optimal Microlensing Observations

One of the major limitations of microlensing observations toward the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is the low rate of event detection. What can be done to improve this rate? Is it better to invest telescope time in more frequent observations of the inner high surface-brightness fields, or in covering new, less populated outer fields? How would a factor 2 improvement in CCD sensitivity affect the...

The Macho Project: Microlensing Results from 5.7 Years of Large Magellanic Cloud Observations

We report on our search for microlensing toward the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Analysis of 5.7 yr of photometry on 11.9 million stars in the LMC reveals 13È17 microlensing events. A detailed treatment of our detection efficiency shows that this is signiÐcantly more than the D2È4 events expected from lensing by known stellar populations. The timescales of the events range from 34 to 230 days....

Microlens Parallax Asymmetries Toward the Large Magellanic Cloud

If the microlensing events now being detected toward the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) are due to lenses in the Milky Way halo, then the events should typically have asymmetries of order 1% due to parallax from the reflex motion of the Earth. By contrast, if the lenses are in the LMC, the parallax effects should be negligible. A ground-based search for such parallax asymmetries would therefore c...

Lmc Microlenses: Dark or Luminous? Subject Headings: Dark Matter – Galaxy: Halo – Gravitational Lensing – Mag- Ellanic Clouds

Zhao has proposed that the microlensing events observed toward the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) could be due to faint stars in a dwarf galaxy or tidal debris lying along the line of sight to the LMC. Zaritsky & Lin claim to have detected such a structure which, they believe, could account for most of the observed microlensing optical depth. Here I show that a large-area surface-brightness map m...

A Spectroscopic Method to Measure Macho Proper Motions

A Massive Compact Halo Object (Macho) that lenses a background star will magnify different parts of the rotating stellar disk by varying amounts. The differential magnification will cause a shift in the centroid of the star’s spectral lines during the lensing event. The shift is proportional to the ratio of the stellar radius to the projected separation of the Macho from the star. It therefore ...
